Medieval Silver Lion Ring

Medieval Silver Lion Ring

Date: c. 14th - 15th Century
Weight: 8.94 grams
Size: 6.75 (U.S.) / N  (U.K.)

History of the Artifact

This silver medieval ring is dated to the 14th-15th centuries A.D. Its apex features a ‘Lion en Passant’ engraved atop a raised ornamental band held by two scooped shoulders forming what is known as a ‘trumpet-shaped’ bezel’.

A note on the ‘Lion en Passant Motif’: The “Lion en passant” (lion walking with one forepaw raised) was a popular heraldic motif in medieval and Renaissance jewelry, symbolizing bravery, strength, and nobility. Frequently seen on signet rings, pendants, and brooches, it also often represented noble lineage.

Similar rings can be found in the collection of the British Museum: (Reference: AF.863)
