Ancient Greek Silver Earrings

Ancient Greek Silver Earrings

Date: c. 200 B.C.
Weight: 4.72 grams
Length: 2 cm / .78 in

History of the Artifact

These delicate and wonderfully well preserved ancient Greek silver earrings still display simple, yet intricate geometric patterns adorning the pieces. Each terminal is adorned with incised rings around the edge - a feature reproduced in the core of each ring alternated with ‘x’ motifs at each end.

Similar examples can be found in the British Museum (Accession number: 2010,5003.53).

A note on Ancient Greek Silver Earrings: Ancient Greek silver earrings featured intricate geometric patterns, reflecting the Greek ideals of harmony and order. Motifs such as the meander (Greek key), spirals, and interlocking shapes symbolized eternity and unity. These designs were not only decorative but also held cultural and symbolic significance. Earrings were worn as status symbols and often depicted refined craftsmanship, influencing jewelry design for centuries.
