World War I | U.S. Soldier's Dog Tag

World War I | U.S. Soldier's Dog Tag

History of the Artifact

This identification tag was issued to soldiers of the United States Army during the early years of the World War II, particularly between 1939 and 1943 before the familiar rectangular style became standard. The tag is distinctly round, a design carried over from earlier U.S. military identification systems used in the interwar period. Each piece was machine-stamped with key identifying information such as the soldier’s name, service number, blood type, and religious affiliation so that medical personnel and administrative units could identify individuals quickly in the field.

The circular format reflects the early stage of wartime mobilization, when identification practices were still evolving as the U.S. military rapidly expanded. Soldiers typically wore the tag on a chain around the neck so it would remain with them at all times during training and deployment. Although later replaced by the more familiar rectangular dog tags introduced during the war, the round pattern represents one of the earliest standardized identification devices issued to American service members as the United States prepared for and entered the global conflict of the 1940s.
