South Vietnam | 50 Xu Coin
History of the Artifact
The 50 Xu coin minted in South Vietnam in 1963 was a small denomination of the South Vietnamese Äá»ng, issued during a turbulent period in the countryâs history. At the time, South Vietnam was under the rule of President NgĂŽ ÄĂŹnh Diá»m, though his government would collapse later that year in a military coup. The coin was part of an effort to modernize the countryâs currency and facilitate everyday transactions. Made of aluminum, it was lightweight and inexpensive to produce, reflecting its role as a low-value unit of currency.Â
On the obverse of the 50 Xu coin, Ngo Dinh Diem , then President of the Republic of Vietnam/South Vietnam (1955-1963), is featured facing left. The reverse instead bears the denomination "50 Xu" along with a decorative bamboo motif. The xu itself was a fractional unit of the Äá»ng, with 100 xu equaling 1 Äá»ng. While the 50 Xu coin was a practical piece of currency, its low value meant it was mainly used for minor, everyday purchases .
Following the fall of South Vietnam in 1975 and the reunification with North Vietnam, the 50 Xu coin, along with all South Vietnamese currency, was demonetized and ceased to be legal tender.
