History of the Artifact

The ancient Corinthian staters are among the most recognizable coins of the Greek world, struck in silver and bearing the winged horse Pegasus on one side and the goddess Athena on the other. Minted in Corinth from roughly the 6th to 3rd centuries BC, they reflected the city’s wealth, seafaring strength, and artistic excellence. Pegasus, shown in graceful flight, symbolized both divine favor and heroic achievement—an emblem drawn from the Corinthian myth of Bellerophon, who tamed the immortal horse with Athena’s aid.

On the reverse, Athena appears wearing a Corinthian helmet, representing wisdom, strategy, and protection over the city and its people. The combination of these two images made the coin instantly recognizable across the ancient world, and Corinth’s staters circulated widely throughout Greece and its colonies. Their elegant design and mythological depth turned them into enduring symbols of Corinth’s power and identity—tokens that today still capture the artistry and spirit of the classical age.
